Learn more about Arne Jacobsen's design legacy

Arne Jacobsen was born and raised in Copenhagen. He is celebrated across the world as one of the driving forces of Danish design and remembered for his contribution to architectural functionalism. Jacobsen’s ideas shaped the landscape of Danish design, rippling out from Scandinavia to influence architects and designers around the world.

Jacobsen could be difficult, sarcastic, and uncompromising towards working partners and manufacturers and required his staff to work more or less around the clock rather than tend to their families - or leave. The other side of his personality shows a very different, rounder Jacobsen, who was absorbed in watercolours, nature studies and tending to saplings.

Arne Jacobsen had collaborated with renowned Danish furniture manufacturer Fritz Hansen since 1934. Creating some of their iconic pieces of furniture; the Egg™, the Swan™, the Series 7™ and the Drop™, among others. The Egg™ chair was designed by Arne Jacobsen for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen in 1958. He found the perfect shape for the chair by experimenting with wire and plaster in his garage. Today, the Egg chair is recognised worldwide as one of the triumphs of Jacobsen’s legendary career and a Scandinavian design icon.

Arne Jacobsen’s designs are as popular today as they ever were, and you can now own iconic pieces of furniture in a variety of materials and colours.
